What is semen wash? Why the advantages of semen are wash?
Semen wash or sperm washing is the process of separating the motile (moving/swimming) and healthy sperms from the rest of the semen sample.
In addition to healthy sperms a man's semen contains cell debris, proteins, and enzymes, leucocytes which are not suitable for direct mixing with eggs (IVF) or for IUI (intrauterine insemination).
These healthy motile sperms are segregated and concentrated in a very small volume of a special solution which nourishes and preserves them for fertilising the egg.
Sperm washing is performed in a series of steps and should be preferably done in an andrology lab or IVF setting where the sterility, temperature and humidity are controlled.
Sperm washing rejuvenates the healthy sperm and increases its potential to fertilise the egg. This increases the chances of pregnancy.
