Hypothyroidism is one of the commonest hormone disorders in women of childbearing age.
1) Hypothyroidism makes conception difficult and even if a woman conceives she has a high risk of miscarriages, pregnancy induced hypertension, placental abruption, low birth weight and perinatal mortality.
2) Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in the development of brain and nervous system in the fetus.
Deficiency of thyroid hormones in the mother may impair development of the fetal nervous system and may cause mental retardation in the baby.
